Kenmore 523 Vintage Sewing Machine

As an alternative to our higher priced, fully restored sewing machines, we've taken a few good machines and tested them and then serviced them, without dismantling and doing the restoration that we usually do. These are high-quality, mid Century machines, built to last, that we check out, make minor repairs if needed, clean and lube, adjust, and then re-test to be sure that they're working as they should, before sending them on to our detailer to make them look like new.

We did, of course, dismantle and clean the upper tension assembly, and the hook and bobbin case, and adjusted them so that your tension will be perfect, and we put in a new needle and checked the belt, cord, and bobbin winder tire to be sure they are safe and ready to sew.

This one is a great Kenmore machine, a straight-stitch model that is capable of zigzag and fancy stitches, with the drop-in stitch pattern cams. We don't have a set to offer with this machine, but they are readily available on eBay or at your local thrift store. We tested the machine with cams from another machine and the stitch patterns were perfect, and we'll send the stitch sample with your new machine.

This machine uses universal needles and standard class 15 bobbins, the most common in the world and available everywhere. It has an easy, bed mounted feed drop and an instant-release sewing foot pressure adjuster, so it will be great for quilting, applique, darning, and any free-motion sewing.

It's a good, strong machine with a 1.2 Amp motor, more than twice as strong as the vintage Singer motors.

This is one that we would have restored if we weren't getting short on space and if we didn't have way too many more that are at least as good as this one to restore. It's in great, barely-used condition and a bargain at this price.
